Q: do the two bins hold together well enough that I could send it through checked luggage at the airport?

I would not send these together. The clips on the sides hold but not enough for that kind of handling. The handle pulls up through the straps on the back of the top bin and that provides more structure but you wouldn't be able to keep that handle up when you check luggage. Your best bet is to send them through as two separate pieces.

Q: What are the INTERIOR dimensions of the TOP unit, and the BOTTOM unit (please give separate sets of dimensions)

These are two different measurements. Is the interior width of the bottom section 12" or 15" or different? ArtBin website says exterior dimension is 18". My machine is 16" across and need to confirm I can squeeze it in there.

Product Dimensions: 17.5 x 13 x 30.5 inches ; 11.1 pounds....Top and bottom are very much the same though I can get more in the top. I quit using a palette and switched to the large multi-holed Styrofoam plates. Wrap them in press n' seal when done and the paint stays fresh for over a week. No more cleaning....just paint and toss them away.

Q: Has anyone used this for cosmetics? Or does anyone think that it would be optimal for the storage of cosmetics?

Currently use for art but was a cosmetologist for 21 years. Yes this would work perfectly. It's simply two open bags that you can use for anything. Put you makeup cases inside. I always had separate containers for eye makeup, one for blush, one for foundations etc. The bottom half great for boxes up to 12 inches wide maybe 18-24 long long. Could easily but 2 shoe boxes on top of each other and still have 1-2 inches at the top plus 6 inches left on the side. The top case easily comes off and can be used on its own. And holds the same amount but top is more flexible with the zipper. Pouch inside that can hold papers, magazines, whatever. Your problem will be packing it so heavy, you can't lift. It's that spacious. Good luck.
