Wonderful book
A great book, insightful as well as offering many citations and an honest review for the evidence of Saxon Heathenism. Written by an author who could well be given the title of "Elder" in the Indigenous traditions of his people, even if (and perhaps because...) he has maintained some distance from the larger modern Heathen "scene". Worth the money for any Heathen and/or historian!

Excellent book, however not for the faint of heart
It's an excellent book for learning more about the religious beliefs and ceremonies of the anglo saxons. It also covers several concepts in depth, such as Weoh, and Hailig. Definitely worth picking up, even if for historical reference.

pollington's best yet
This is THE book on Anglo Saxon Heathenry. Engaging, entertaining, a total page turner which outlines Heathen beliefs, practice, lore, etc. Much like all Pollington's books, this is essential.

The “Bible” of the Pre-Christian English Religion; for heathens and academics alike
It is a Bible in the sense that it is a compendium of literally *everything* we know about the Anglo-Saxon heathen religion, from archeology to literary evidence to study of language to comparative studies with their Norse brothers. It is written in such a way as to be accessible to the average person, even though, (thankfully) it is academic in nature and thus does not revert to New Age stuff. If you want to learn about the traditions and practices of our ancestors, whether you’re English, or have Anglo ancestry like many Americans, Australians, Canadians, and so on, this is THE book to buy - or if you’re just interested; this is NOT a closed practice or study, of course. I would like to see the Anglo-Saxon religion perpetuated and gain the same traction as Norse heathenry has in modern times. The Anglo-Saxons were the original Vikings and this book beautifully shows how complicated and rich their religion and traditions were.

Could not recommend highly enough
I purchased this book as an Archaeology Undergraduate. Not really necessary for my degree, it was more out of personal interest. It did not disappoint.Firstly I must take a moment to recommend the publishers themselves, (Anglo-Saxon Books), who sent me another copy free of charge when I emailed them stating I had accidental had it delivered to my previous address. That is top class customer service alone. The book itself does what it says on the tin, as the other review states, the is THE definitive overview of Anglo-Saxon Heathenism. The work from linguistics, archaeology and history that has gone into this work is astounding, and I honestly think it will be many years before a work as complete as this is published. This is literary coverage of ALL the evidence there is for this difficult subject, compiled by an expert who has written several books on the period.Perhaps not great for a coffee table read, but if you have an interest in Anglo-Saxon Heathenism, whether a researcher, student or heathen, this is by far and away the best book you can buy.

Excellent book. Well researched and well written it does ...
Excellent book. Well researched and well written it does not descend into wishful thinking or desperate leaps of faith. instead it gives a well reasoned view based on a sensible interpretation of the available evidence.
